ESX/ESXi root login over SSH

This is an old one, but worthy of documentation… By default root login over SSH is disabled in ESX 3.X and vSphere 4.X. While it is best practice for security to leave this disabled, from time to time a situation [...]

vCenter 4.0 Update 2 breaks EMC Virtual Storage Integrator

After upgrading to vCenter 4.0 Update 2, the EMC Virtual Storage Integrator plugin is not working. Upon launching vCenter, I received several errors:

“Method not found: ‘VMware.CustomControls.LabelEx VpxVlient.Common.Util.Helper.AddLabel(System,Windows,Forms,Control, Int32, Int32, ……”

This same issue occured when upgrading to U1. A subsequent reinstall fixed it, but that does not appear to be working for U2. I have since disabled the plugin and need to check PowerLink to see if a new version of the Integrator is available.

Has anyone out there seen this or been able to fix it?

MACMALL – Quite possibly the worst reseller ever.

It’s not often that I feel the need to write something that calls out a vendor like this. This weekend, and into today (Monday), I had quite possibly the worst purchasing experience I’ve ever had.

I’ve been mulling over the purchase of a new MacBook Pro for quite some time. I’m a big time Windows user, but know plenty of folks with Mac’s who swear by them. On Saturday I finally decided to bite the bullet on a new 15″ MacBook Pro with an i5 processor, and a high-res anti-glare screen. MacMall just so happend to have 2 in stock! Perfect!

I get my order in via the Internet at 2PM EST, I select overnight shipping in hopes to have the laptop in on Monday. At 8:21PM EST I get an email from MACMALL stating I need to call them back to verify my credit. At first I’m thinking “OK, whats the deal”…but I decide that this is probably just for security reasons so I call them. Turns out their credit department closes at 8PM EST, so I can’t have my credit verified until Monday, which means no laptop until Tuesday. I’m a little annoyed at this point, so I ask the customer service rep to guarantee me the laptop will be here Tuesday. The rep tells me she can’t, because now they’re out of stock and won’t have them until May 11th. We go back and forth on this trying to figure out how the whole things work, but long story short, I cancel my order. I go to MACMALL’s site and sure enough the config I want now shows as out of stock.

A few hours later, I’m back on their site. I refresh the page for the config I want, and it now shows as “ships next day” again. REALLY confused, I call them back. They now claim there is 1 in stock, and if I order it they can GUARANTEE it’s mine. Even though I’m beyond upset @ this point, I really want the laptop, so I go ahead and order it, and plan to call in Monday AM when they open at 9AM EST to verify my credit. The customer service rep ensures me she will look after my case, and make sure the next shift does too. YEA, right!

Today is Monday. I call in at 9AMEST, and after spending 15 minutes with someone on the phone, we finally get my credit verified, and another customer service rep guarantees me it will ship today. Turn the clock forward 30 minutes, I refresh my order status on their page and my order is now showing as “Back ordered”. WTF!

I call them back and get the run around from the customer service rep about how she’s sorry and don’t know how this happened.

I’m awaiting a manager call back at 11AM EST. To be continued.

Update: VCB End of Life/Networker Support

According to this BLOG post, vStorage support for EMC’s Legato Networker is coming some time in the 2nd half of this year. This is great news.

Thanks to Brian at Going Virtual for posting this good news.

VCB End of Life announced

Received this a few minutes ago.. will have to see what’s up next with Legato Networker in terms of utilizing the new vSphere API’s!

Dear Valued Customer,
The purpose of this letter is to inform you of our vSphere backup product strategy, ongoing enhancements, and end of availability plans for VMware Consolidated Backup.
VMware Backup Product Strategy
VMware released vStorage APIs for Data Protection (VADP) with the vSphere 4.0 release in May, 2009. VADP is the next generation of VMware’s backup framework. We have also been working with several backup partners to integrate VADP into their solutions to make backup of vSphere Virtual Machines fast, efficient and easy to deploy compared to VCB and other backup solutions. Several of our major backup partners have already released VADP integrated backup products and we expect most of the major backup partners to have VADP integrated backup software by the upcoming feature release of the vSphere platform in 2010.
Future Product Licensing
Given the strong interest and adoption of VADP by our backup eco-system and the benefits offered by VADP compared to VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB), we are announcing the End of Availability for VCB starting with next vSphere feature release in 2010. Starting with the next vSphere platform feature release, VCB will be removed from vSphere platform. VADP integrated backup products (including VMware Data Recovery) will be the recommended option for efficient backup and restoration of vSphere Virtual Machines. This will allow us to focus new value added feature development on VADP instead of two backup frameworks (VCB and VADP). You can find more information about the use of vStorage APIs for Data Protection in our Developer Community. For information on the availability of VADP integrated release of your backup product please contact your backup vendor.
End of Availability
With the release of the next vSphere platform, we will continue to provide the binaries for VCB, but they will not be compatible with the next platform release. We will continue to provide support for VCB on the current vSphere platform per the VMware support policy.
If you need assistance in the migration from VMware Consolidated Backup to the vStorage APIs for Data Protection, please contact your local reseller or storage backup vendor.

Can’t say I’m disappointed, but where’s Networker support for the new API’s?!?
